We invite you to join the many persistent and generous “Guardians of History” who have been responsible for saving a portion of the National Historic District of Freedmen’s Town, the ONLY remaining, post Civil War, National Historic District of previously enslaved peoples, of its kind, in the United States.
As you read this, historic homes and brick streets are being destroyed and historic Churches are in jeopardy. Since 1984, over 500 National Register Historic Structures have been demolished. Houston does not have an appropriate Historic Preservation Ordinance that protects African American historic structures, brick streets, archaeology, and Churches.
Your donations will enable us to continue our efforts to save the Cultural History of the African Diaspora, through the development of our "Educational & Cultural Park Corridor" Master Plan, located in what little is left of the National Historic District of Freedmen’s Town. Due to the growing support for the Museum, we have:
* Acquired and completed development of a parking lot.
* Acquired 4 lots for permanent green-classrooms/archaeology field schools.
* Acquired the National Register Rev. Pullum home plus 3 additional homes to be restored for use as Museum houses and archaeology field schools.
* Begun architectural planning for two additional National Register museum houses.
* Continued to conduct university-accredited archaeology field schools, oral history programs, and archaeological surveys.
* Continued to provide “Authors Corner” lectures, and Juneteenth Family Heritage day.
* Continued architectural and program planning for proper and accurate restoration of the historic Gregory School and the historic brick streets.
* Continued to use the historic Yates House, as an archaeology laboratory, for classes in both analysis and archive management of our growing artifact collection.
* Provided paid internships for four Prairie View A&M architecture students and several UH & HCC archaeology students.
* Assisting area historic churches with preservation and archaeology fieldwork.
Urgent!! We need you as a “Guardian of History”. Please send your donation today so we can continue with our difficult tasks and educational programs. Future generations will thank you.
Sincerely,
Byron Cobbin, President
