Guardians of History 2002-2004

Its true, art for the sake of art is useless. Art has the power to educate, activate and motivate. As much as my aim was to create aesthetically pleasing and mesmerizing art, I sought to educate the public about the archaeology, history and culture of Freedmen’s Town. The exhibit allows the viewer, who may be naïve to the community, to learn and understand the historical significance of one of few remaining historic districts.

The poetics of words and images about Freedmen’s Town engages the minds about this historic district in Houston, Texas. The production and display of visual art has had a critical role in the presentation of archaeological knowledge. Photography and graphic design have been valuable tools, inspired by historical research, material culture, land use analysis, transcribed interviews and participant-observation. I used the reflexivity to consider the method and praxis of creating and presenting ethnographic visual media. The overall objective of the exhibit is to serve as an aesthetically pleasing educational and preservation campaign for Freedmen’s Town.
